Programs relevant to the industries for the development of their technicians could be organized at the Institute in the follwing areas.
- Quality Improvement Programs for the Working Technicians
- Skill Development Training Programs
1. Quality Improvement Programs (QIP) for the technicians
 |
Quality Improvement Programs are meant for sponsored technicians in selected areas of interest to concretize the scholastic contents learnt wither in their technical institutions or acquired through experience. Generally the workforce at these levels tend to depend more on the practical knowledge acquired over a period of time without having a right kind of theoretical input to perform a task. The task may be accomplished but the avenues to explore improvement in productivity, efficiency and cost effectiveness remain unexplored. It is in this context the right kind of theoretical input blended with practice assume special importance. Revision of what was learnt, supplementing what is known with the latest trends and enabling the participants to participate in the technical discussions with their superiors will help a great deal in improving the overall efficiency of the system. This is achieved through the Quality Improvement programs.
QIPs do not generally exceed 30 hrs of interaction with the faculty members if the institute. The trainees will be required to attend 3 sessions of 2 hours duration per week. These courses can be organized at mutually convenient time.
Eligibility and Flexibility
The courses are modular in nature providing greater flexibility in as far as the course contents are concerned. A multidisciplinary approach to enhance the technical competence of the target group is generally followed. The trainee of his/her sponsor can select the course contents from the contents in-built into a training module. As the programs are designed for both new recruits and experienced personnel from the industry, format educational certificates are not insisted upon. However the candidate should fulfill certain minimum requirements to be communicated at the time of working out the course curriculum.
2. Short term skill development training programs
Short term skill development training programs in the areas of production engineering aim at imparting skills in operating the machines with an exposure to maintenance of these machines. These programs will be organized on a 3-tier level.
- Awareness Programs
- Skill Development programs
- Orientation programs
Awareness Programs
At this level the trainees are given an exposure to the trade period ranging from 1 to 2 weeks. At the end of the program, they will be in the knowledge of scope and areas of their work besides knowing the intricacies involved. Up keeping in the relevant trade will be an integral part of the course.
Skill Development Programs
Skill Development Programs are the advanced version of the Awareness programs wherein the trainees develop the relevant skill to work in the relevant trades. They will have in-depth knowledge of their areas of work besides having the basic skills. Generally the duration of the training program ranges from 8 weeks to 10 weeks.
Orientation Programs
Orientation programs are for personnel who have already good experience in the area, but need orientation in a particular aspect of the trade. Generally such programs do not exceed a week.
Hours of Training
The duration of the programs are usually defined in weeks. A week will have 5 working days from Saturday to Wednesday and the period of the training will be 3 hours per day. The normal duration of the course could be stretched over a maximum period of 2.5 times the normal duration retaining a minimum of two working days per week to suit both the sponsors and the trainee.
